Equitable Cultivation of Hidden Deaf Education Leaders
Identifying and cultivating external and internal leaders is a significant challenge throughout Deaf Education and the Deaf community. In this presentation, learn how your school can enhance the development of aspiring leaders. Learn how to advocate for the dismantling of systemic barriers that would otherwise inhibit leaders from growing in their current role, applying to a new role with greater responsibility and decision-making, or moving up whether within the organization or with another organization. This workshop is designed for the established leader or aspiring leader who wishes to contribute toward the continued success of their school and field of Deaf Education.

Proposals to Expand the Deaf Teacher Pipeline

The benefits of Deaf teachers are many. However, we face a growing shortage of teachers of the Deaf and the majority of Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing students are served in settings without Deaf role-models. Three pathways will be proposed to expand the Deaf teacher pipeline. 1. Teacher Licensure: Results and recommendations from a 2021 survey of 36 schools for the Deaf will be shared. This survey explores perceptions around licensure exams, accommodations, bias, reforms, and alternative pathways for Deaf teacher candidates. 2. Ohio Deaf Educators Rising: How to use an extracurricular program that encourages Deaf students to explore careers in education. 3. Establishing scholarships for rising Deaf educators.

Leadership - Growing Your Own Team

Leadership - Growing your Own Team

This past year has taught school leaders important lessons which have influenced their way of work and decision making.  Overcoming challenges occurs when you work side by side with incredible team members - when everyone is all in.  Schools must have leadership teams that possess high emotional intelligence, have a growth mindset, are self-motivated, willing to make mistakes in order to learn, share ideas, take ownership, listen to each other, united with one voice, are creative and grow new leaders.  Regardless if you are a new leader or someone who has been in that role for a number of years, this presentation will answer the question "How Do I Grow My Team?

Participants will:

1)  Learn best practices for growing and fostering effective leadership teams.

2)  Network with other school leaders (workshop participants) to engaging in meaningful discussions focused on successful teams.

3)  Action plan practical strategies and ideas to implement at their school/program sites.

Substance Abuse Disorder Prevention Education in Schools - Is Enough Being Done?
With the opioid epidemic showing no signs of slowing down and the ever-changing world of mood-altering substances continuing to permeate society, the need for accessible alcohol and drug prevention education in K-12 schools becomes much more critical. Multiple studies show that delaying first time use of alcohol or drugs in adolescents reduces the likelihood of developing Substance Use Disorders later in life. This presentation will provide insight into various strategies used in schools and discuss potential applications in K-12 programs for deaf or hard of hearing students.

Self-Advocacy for Children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Self-advocacy is the ability to make one's own decisions and learn how to speak up for oneself. Unfortunately, students who are D/HH don’t learn self-advocacy skills because decisions are made for them.  DCMP has videos for all ages that foster self-advocacy and being fully accessible, they promote independent learning opportunities.
